Lake Oswego, OR Community

March is National Reading Month, and Lake Oswego is leaning into it with more momentum than ever.

The tradition dates back to Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2, which sparked Read Across America Day and eventually evolved into a full month dedicated to literacy for all ages. For Lake Oswego specifically, March 2026 holds something worth celebrating: the city’s beloved Lake Oswego Reads program marks its 20th anniversary, a milestone that shows just how deeply reading is woven into this community’s identity.

What’s on the Shelf This Year

The 2026 Lake Oswego Reads selection is Tilt by Emma Pattee, a gripping novel about a Portland mother navigating the immediate aftermath of a major Cascadia earthquake. It’s Pacific Northwest-rooted, thought-provoking, and exactly the kind of story that gets people talking.

The first 875 library cardholders were eligible to grab a free copy during the early-March book giveaway at Lake Oswego Public Library, 706 4th St. Missed the giveaway? The book is still available in print, digital, and audiobook formats through the library system at no cost, so there’s still every reason to read along with your community before the month wraps up.

Why Reading Actually Matters

It’s easy to treat reading as just another to-do, but the benefits go deeper than most people realize. America’s Charities outlines what consistent reading does across all age groups:

  • Sharpens memory and sustained focus

  • Builds vocabulary and communication skills

  • Strengthens comprehension and critical thinking

  • Lowers stress and supports emotional well-being

  • Develops empathy by exposing readers to different lives and perspectives

When families build a reading habit together, children develop stronger literacy skills and a healthier relationship with learning that carries forward well beyond grade school. For adults, picking up a book regularly is one of the simplest ways to stay mentally sharp.

Still Time to Join the Fun

There’s still a solid stretch of March ahead, and the Lake Oswego Public Library has programming worth checking out:

  • Pollinator Art Workshop | Today, March 20 | 11:00 AM | Ages 5 and up | A drop-in creative session hosted by Drawn2Art, perfect for young readers and curious minds

  • A Bookish Affair | An online event for book enthusiasts | Check the library calendar for current timing and registration details

All events are free and open to the public, making it easy for any Lake Oswego family to show up without any advance planning.

Easy Ways to Build the Habit

You don’t need a big commitment to make reading a regular part of your week. Small, consistent actions are what actually stick:

  • Set a 20-minute window before bed for the whole family, phones in another room

  • Let kids pick their own books, whether that’s a graphic novel, manga, or nonfiction

  • Try the 3-2-1 strategy after each session: 3 things learned, 2 interesting points, and 1 question. RIF.org uses this approach to actively boost comprehension and keep readers engaged

  • Swap books with neighbors, coworkers, or parents at school pickup

  • Use your library card to access free eBooks and audiobooks through the Lake Oswego Public Library system anytime, anywhere

Grab a Book Before March Ends
